Trump Wants To Send Food Boxes Directly To Food Stamps Recipients And Replace A Portion Of The Food Stamp Benefits!

Donald Trump’s new budget proposed to have the Department of Agriculture prepare and send packages of food directly to food stamps recipients and replace a portion of their food stamp benefits.

The proposal, new in the White House fiscal 2019 budget, is for families to receive some of their benefits “in the form of a USDA Foods package, which would include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready-to-eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish.”

Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney called it a “Blue Apron-type program” Monday afternoon, comparing it to the meal kit service. The government would save money on the box, he said, because it could buy the food items wholesale, whereas typically food stamp recipients have to buy food at retail prices.

The broader budget document, which is a proposal from the White House to Congress, calls for reducing SNAP or food stamp spending by more than $200 billion over the next 10 years. The government spent $64 billion on SNAP benefits in 2017.

The Office of Management and Budget argued for reduced spending on the grounds that the food stamp program hasn’t shrunk as quickly as the economy has grown after the recession. Some conservatives have argued that the program is serving as a form of indirect welfare spending, rather than nutritional assistance, and is discouraging work.

The package would be filled with “100 percent American grown food” and shipped directly to recipients, according to the budget documents.

No. I have gone to food pantry assistance and received items not on my diet or duplicated. It is more helpful for someone receiving SNAP to be able to purchase the foods they would eat and the holes in your pantry or refrigerator/freezer. They have changed the standards for receiving food stamps. As an elderly single woman of low income it has hurt me as I no longer qualify. I am not buying meat and fresh vegetables/ fruit. Not good for my nutrition.

I think it is a great idea….. Should be accompanied by menu printouts and tips. Many of these people dine at home better than the rest of us can even begin to afford or use their welfare for fast food outlets. It is time to revanp the rules and get those who treat food stamps as an entitlement to get real!
Like maybe – LEARN TO FRICK-FRACKIN’ COOK AND “MADE DO” like the rest of us do!

In the late 50’s and into the 60’s there were warehouses that stocked government surplus foods, if you were on unemployment you were intitled to these foods on a regular basis. I grew up in these handouts and was glad to have them.

I think cutting into our peoples food stamps with food they have not selected for their familys could be a big mistake. Mostly because we dont no each familys situation. Due to diabedic..allergies..heart conditions..cancer .. The list is to big to go on. If I may suggest, instead of cutting our citizens who are in need, maybe we should cut some of the aid we give to Isreal..or other forgin countries. Maybe start there instead of takeing away from our cituzens. I really think it will cause alot more problems doing this.

Agreed. I think this still also stop the fraud. Many folks are selling for drugs and alcohol. Sure hope to see this come to fruition.

The overall idea, on its face, sounds good until you think about things like allergies and specific dietary needs, concerns about quality, etc. Some could very well become much more ill as a result.

I appreciate much of what Trump has done and is doing, but this is a very bad idea at the PERSONAL level. If you are FOR Americans, reducing health of some over money is not equating.

It can’t be any worse than my current fifteen dollars worth of food stamps-!!…
This is all the same stuff as local pantries give out here. I’d rather they went back to the REAL COMMODITIES they used to give out in 80’s or 90’s-?. Once they gave out very fresh eggs, honey, cheese, & USDA beef in cans that was incredibly good. Nothing seems as good as it used to be unless they get local fresh produce donated. That happens in my state.

Yes! Great suppliments perhaps? But… Some folks DO have special diet requirements.
I know a lady who was brain damaged in a car wreck, has seizures, lives on ($525?very little) ssd & $15 food stamps & that isn’t enough.
There are many who are young, able bodied, but recieve $100s.
    Clean up the system!
Perhaps Incorporate a “work for food” job program maybe for those who are able? Too much abuse in the system!

Anything to lessen the gross mishandling of food stamps now going on. Why do liquor stores advertise EBT accepted? It’s obvious misuse of the stamps
