Breaking: United Healthcare CEO Fatally Shot in Midtown Manhattan—Details and Video From The Shooting Scene
In a chilling incident that has shocked corporate America, Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel early Wednesday morning. The targeted attack unfolded just steps away from the Hilton on Sixth Avenue, where UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference was set to take place.
The shooting occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. ET, as Thompson approached the hotel. Surveillance video revealed the gunman lying in wait, arriving at the scene about five minutes before Thompson. Thompson was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after. The assailant fled the scene and remains at large. Authorities believe the attack was premeditated, though the motive remains unclear. “Based on the evidence we have so far, it does appear that the victim was specifically targeted,” Kenny stated.
UnitedHealth Group released a statement expressing their shock and grief: “We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
In his most recent role as CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he was responsible for leading growth across the company’s global, employer, individual, specialty and government benefits businesses, according to a 2021 company statement announcing his appointment.
The tragic event disrupted the company’s conference, with UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty announcing its cancellation shortly after the shooting. “We’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” Witty told attendees.
UnitedHealthcare, the largest U.S. health insurer, plays a critical role in the lives of millions of Americans. This shocking loss leaves many unanswered questions about who could have orchestrated such a brazen attack—and why. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation intensifies.
