Illegal Immigrant Claims ICE Abduction—But Security Footage Tells a Very Different Story
A Mexican national living illegally in Los Angeles is now facing serious federal charges after staging an elaborate fake kidnapping—and blaming it on ICE.
Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon, 41, is charged with conspiracy and making false statements to federal officers after she allegedly orchestrated a hoax to make it appear she had been abducted by immigration agents in a Jack in the Box parking lot. Her story quickly went viral, with left-wing activists rallying behind her, mainstream media filming emotional protests, and her daughter launching a GoFundMe to “find her.”
Calderon’s attorney held a press conference on June 30, claiming ICE agents had taken her five days earlier and driven her two hours to the border near San Ysidro. From there, the story spiraled: secret warehouses, masked agents, and tearful children holding signs saying, “Our Mom is Missing.”

But federal authorities say the whole thing was fiction.
The Department of Homeland Security launched a full-scale investigation over the Fourth of July weekend—only to find Calderon shopping in Bakersfield, hundreds of miles away from where she claimed to be held. Surveillance footage showed her calmly leaving the Jack in the Box in a private vehicle. Phone records and security videos debunked every part of the abduction claim.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli called the hoax a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” and slammed the dangerous rhetoric surrounding ICE. “This fake kidnapping wastes resources, incites anger, and puts our agents at risk,” he said.
HSI agents echoed that sentiment, calling the incident a reckless abuse of time and law enforcement manpower. Even GoFundMe took swift action, refunding donors and shutting down the fundraiser before any money was withdrawn.
Calderon now faces up to 10 years behind bars—and this time, she really is in custody.
This hoax isn’t just embarrassing—it’s dangerous. It stokes hatred, invites violence, and gives more ammo to radicals looking to undermine law and order.
